They should start a program up called " How to score goals in international matches " I know you jest but are also serious at the same time. What i don't understand that in the last decade of the new a-league their hasn't been a devoted FFA National Striker school where the best kids do nothing but shoot, turn, head and work the 18 yard box for hours on end. Passing through cones and doing mind-numbing drills "with a few shots" at the end of training will not fix the massive problem we have up front. Just my 2 cents worth. Once Matt Simon gets his academy started I think you will find this will no longer be an issue.

Yes, we need more academies! They have proven over the years that they are the answer to all problems, especially the owners fiscal problems.

thommo,
In my opinion we have a real issue with this goal scoring business. I always taught my young teams to shoot if you get an opportunity anywhere near the box. Just shoot and I don't care if you miss or the shot gets saved. This new batch of Socceroos frustrate me immensely.
Look at that Scottish boy, he has a go and scores 2 last night.

#9 appears to be the biggest problem in Australian football right now. Not one of the current Socceroos options is close to the standard required. Can anyone identify the problem?
Obvious issues appear to be; * Biggest strongest fastest played at 9, dominate youth because of physical advantage but ineffective once they start playing against men. * Sessions in NPL are based on the collective, not the individual, and as such, as mentioned above, strikers aren’t a training for hours in and around the box, they are training in a team environment and don’t get the required touches during training * Semi-Professional and A-League clubs sign 9s & 10s imports and as such young Australian players don’t get any opportunity at the highest level in the country * AIS program closed down and development handed to the A-League clubs, see above

You can buy goals online, I’m sure your kids have plenty of balls, there are plenty of local football grounds, setup the goals at the park and let them shoot until their hearts content

What I don’t understand with these programs is that they are based on paying fees also, so again people with low income families miss out if their kid has potential, yet the FFA and NSW government pump money into these schools. Just another example of the football is played with the wallet in this country instead of the feet. I don't think they get funding, its a user pays system, that's the sad part by our administrators, that selected kids pay at all levels, even national youth championships...pay until you die

Any kid who doesn't spend his own time developing the skills specific to his position outside of team training 3 nights a week is simply not serious about football. Doesn't matter how you do it, with dad, friends, 1 on 1 coaching, whatever.

Does "serious about football" also imply seriously deluded?

You talking about yourself?
It may shock you, but some kids have a dream to do well in their chosen vocation. Sport, music, academia etc. It may also shock you, (given NT's mid-table at best performances) that to actually do well in something, you need to practice.
Serious, doesn't mean i think i'm going to play for Real Madrid. It can mean striving to be the best you can at something you enjoy.
But i kinda think you knew that and were just being your usual self.

U14 Wanderers Cup today was won by BPHS - a SFC (HAL) Academy School. They defeated Westfields SHS - a FFA program school.
The irony of the result is that the FFA program has 'identified' 5 of the BPHS players and have offered them the chance to join the FFA program in 2019 where "you have more chance of making the Joeys if you attend"...
Some of the players trialled in Year 6 but were deemed not good enough...but, two years later they are?
What happens or what happened to those that were identified but now are no longer required in the program?
Who is deemed to have failed here then?
Australian football - if we can't win, bring in ones that can help win and get rid of those that can't...
A wise old man once said:
"Anyone can coach good players but not everyone can help them become great"...
and "It is easy to accumulate good players to win titles but it is harder to develop them to be successful outside of that team."
