OK People here's a good one for you. Watch the highlights of last weekends game, Sydney Uni V Rams in WPL1. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cN8Em3fbukNow at the 1:07 mark, Number 10 from Rams, in my opinion, deliberately throws the ball at her opponent number 8 with force. Can anyone with a referee qualification tell me how she didn't get sent off. Number 3 from Uni gets sent off in the incident, for what i can only presume to be something she said, and number 10 seems to escape totally unpunished and the game swings on it's head as a result. Crazy stuff!! I think both players were cautioned, the thrower for the reckless throw and the other for retaliation. I think the red was for language.

Crazy stuff!! Great "Falcon".......................... anyway But I still thought it was intentional and certainly had plenty of force in the throw. Players fault to some degree for turning here back on the ball, no excuse for that.

From my point of view it's quite obvious the ball was thrown at the players head with force and could have resulted in a nasty injury from the point of view of being unexpected, etc. But for the offense of swearing, or as it states in the Laws of the Game; using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures, very easy decision to make, send her off. Now, what's the more heinous of the two crimes? No one can tell me words hurt more than a ball thrown, with force, to back of ones head!!!! All in the Referees Opinion of course!!

Depends what the words are. Some words can cut through a player like a knife.

Re the throw, the referee has to decide if the contact from the throw was careless (give a free kick), reckless (free kick and YC) or using excessive force (free kick and RC). I think the throw falls into the reckless area and I understand she received a YC for the incident so all as per LoTG. The swearing depending on what was said and to whom, could be a RC. As a RC was shown, you'd think is was fairly bad. Again, as per LoTG As for saying one incident is worse than the other, the referee has to act on and sanction all incidents in accordance with the LoTG. While I understand your concern, if the referee does not sanction the swearing they'd cop it for that as well. The players know if they swear they're gone. As far as contact goes, the referee has to decide careless, reckless or excessive using appropriate guidelines. For me, I think the actions were appropriate.

As far as this video, if the red card was for 'swearing' and if the reports of the yellow card are correct, then I think the referee did everything right except for physically handling the players. The red card punishment for offensive and abusive language is not because of the hurt (or lack of). Its because of the the consequences of their use. Many all in brawls start with offensive language. Crafty players use offensive language to get their opponents sent off. They have no room in our game.
