Before any cricket lovers start, I did not mean to offend anyone and I am sorry if I did. Even boring people need a game to love.

Of course a smaller population in a country with 3 or 4 major sports which are supported by the media has an affect. If "soccer" received as much saturation and monetary support it would be the stronger and more successful code. How many potential players are lost to AFL, Union and League ? The sport is expensive compared to those 3 codes. I believe rego is free for Rubgy L. I'm not sure about the other codes. Then I haven't mention the cricket either but why anyone would want to play that brain dead sport or actually pay to sit there like a wombat in the burning sun is beyond me. Are you kidding? 1)Again, it is the most played sport in Australia so linking price and numbers does not stack up. For the slow learner(s)...There are more than enough football participants they just do not want to watch A-League. So fix A-League!! 2)Amazing how some think we are the only country in the world that plays more than one sport. Rubbish!

tarzan,
So what, more kids play football than any other sport. They get to their teenage years and it's over and most don't want to play seriously anymore and go back to association football or give the game away. You can push your figures all you want, it's not producing the players. Rugby League, Rubgy and AFL do take a very large portion of gifted athletes away from our game. The money at the top end is much better than the A-League or State Leagues for even the average players. Don't blame the A-League for the lack of talent because if the talent was here they would be playing A-League. It's no ones fault really and things may improve in the future. Fix the A-League - how ?

Each state football federation needs to be run exclusively professional with a solid pyramid structure and have two pro leagues, then one can be invited to A League, this would reduce travel costs, increase participation, and more importantly create professional pathways for the players, sadly, we the football lovers a apparently deaf, dumb and blind to voice our opinions.

God, yes that's not a bad idea. He may offer some assistance. At the very least he'll be capable of having a decent discussion.

Sorry, quite bust at the moment with many other things to concentrate on (Middle East, Trump, Barnaby, you get the drift). However, as soon as time permits, I will look at putting a standing Committee together to investigate Football in Aus. I will get a few Angels to do some preliminary leg work. I believe that Michael and Gabriel and possibly Selaphiel may have some time. Regards God

Completely agree, but won't happen.
Look at what Gallop did to the NRL. No interest in crowd numbers, its all about TV rights. You can see that he wants the same legacy with the A-league. Only difference is that as the A-league is a family business, the money won't trickle down.
But its not just the A-League, NPL level football is a jobs for the boys club as well. Most clubs have a committee that has as much commercial sense as the average 5 year old.
Sydney United earlier this year released supporters gear. And what do they do, put a massive "CROATIA" on the back of the t-shirts Great idea to please your existing 50-100 fans. Absolutely stupidity if you want to grow your fan base beyond those that are already there.
Marconi - huge club. On any game night, you have thousands inside the club talking crap, playing pokies, and 15m away, 20 fans watching a game. (The other 50 are parents and friends of the players) Would it really ne that hard to come up with a marketing campaign to move a few hundred of those people already inside the club, across to the game for 90mins??
The game/clubs urgently need passionate football lovers, WITH a commercial sense to be in charge. Passion alone is nowhere near enough.

Agree, whilst its important to have quality football people around, clubs need experienced corporate people to run the business. People that have very clear goals and accountabilities. People that are paid well for achieving goals and removed if they don't.

I know the world has changed a lot, but trying to get people to goto senior games at 7pm on a Saturday night in the middle of winter, is optimistic at best. I know we have issues with grounds and associated youth logistics, but I wonder if a 3pm Saturday kick off for first grade would improve things much from a spectator point of view? It probably wouldn't, but all things being equal, if I had a choice, the more traditional kick off time would suit. Back in the day, a long time ago in Perth, it was 17s at 11.45, reserves at 1.00 and first grade at 3pm. Life seemed simpler then and you were home for dinner...

There was hardly a sausage sizzle in those days, although at Inglewood Kiev you could get a pretty good fish'n'chips.

Mercurial,
I went to support my team at Marconi on a beautiful Saturday night. Maybe 30 to 40 Marconi supporters went to the ground and the club was packed. It's a shame really. How you can change that around, I don't know. Maybe the youth watch the English PL and the European competitions and don't even rate our state and A-leagues.
