On holiday in the UK at the moment and yesterday watched a Division One game between Peterborough United and Bury. Just under 5,000 spectators in a relatively intimate Stadium and without being a snob, the "experience" was superior to the A League one. The game tempo was high and with both teams pressing quite high at times, the skills under that kind of pressure were clearly greater than what we get domestically. The other thing I found interesting was seeing close up that fouls that might have been given in A League (or youth league) were just waved play on. I suspect it probably breeds a more robust player and some of the skills displayed under that type of pressure were quite impressive I thought. The general pace of the game was higher and certainly was a reminder that our league has some way to go. I think a Sydney FC game played in a venue more like the ABAX Stadium we visited yesterday would be a much more TV friendly venue and probably make our game look a bit more exciting. I've always thought that the A League was the equivalent of lower championship/League 1 but in many respects we are comparing apples and oranges. Not just that the A League if franchise based but the different climates lend themselves to a different style of game and don't get me started on promotion and relegatiion !!

If I had to guess, League 1 feels about the equivalent of A League, but it would be an interesting style contrast as our build up play seems a bit more laboured and not quite the same sort of press you get in the UK.
We went to watch Real Madrid play Numancia (second division) in a cup match last night and whilst RM rested quite a few (sadly for us), it was still something to see when skills were executed exquisitely and at amazing pace. Certainly, it was interesting to watch when it's clear that they are seeing well in advance of us mere mortals where the ball will finish. Plus, the ball really only seemed to go in the air as an absolute last resort. The other thing was how fast the RM players were able to not even have to tackle, but nip in and intercept cleanly and they loved keeping the ball in play. I don't watch much Spanish football on TV, but I gotta say, seeing it live, obviously with top notch players, is a real thrill.

Hey Arnie, stop talking it up.
Anyone can buy a team. How about attempting to develop some local talent.

The real test comes now in ACL, I will be curious to see how the game plan holds up. For me, this is the real audition for the Australia job, not winning the A League.

I suspect its more to do with having players of the class of Bobo, Adrian & Ninko than any game plan that Arnies put together. Yes looking forward to seeing if it works in the ACL.

I think they will do well. The foreign players are very good. That goal Ninko scored was a beauty. Bobo is no dodo. He is a cut above the rest at this level.

Both wsw and roar donβt deserve finals... pathetic finals system of 60% of competition rewarded and no relegation ..

When you can finish 30 points behind first place and play semi final football then the system is flawed. But everyone outside the FFA already know that.

4231 or anyone else,
for arguments sake who would you promote to the A-League for the next season if relegation was introduced ? I'm not going to be critical at all, I'm just curious. I'm not against the idea but I believe very few clubs could afford to have a team in the A-League.
