I saw three games over the weekend in two of them a coach/assistant used a mobile phone in the technical area while the games was in progress. It is not only against the laws of the game but also IMHO show lack of respect towards the rest of the team. Turn it off once you are in the technical area. If you need to make an emergency call, get out of the tech area and make your call.
I think the referees should take a stricter approach to this.

What if the manager needs to contact the coach urgently from across the other side of the field or from outisde the ground and the coaches phone is off?

What if the manager needs to contact the coach urgently from across the other side of the field or from outisde the ground and the coaches phone is off? Don't worry fiikster. Ill still call you if needed. I had a player injured yesterday. No other subs on the bench and I called my manager who was in the process of organizing 1st grade for two reasons 1 to get ice and 2 to get another player ready who was on the team sheet. If I was wrong then so be it. But I wasn't walking over the other side of the field to organise this. But I really wouldn't expect anything else from referees. Their current inability to pick up fouls is disgraceful. They are more concerned with color of tape, skins, not allowing common sense to take over and allow players to have a drink in the shade at drinks break in a trial, making a player run 30m back to the sideline after an interchange was made because they didn't wait for the subbed player to come off, it was literally one step. Playing stoppage time in a trial game but cutting halves to 40mins cause they were running late and not telling anyone. But of course mobile phones are the biggest worry in the game. And these have just been in trial games. Can't wait for the real fun to start in the comp.

If it's against the rules, it's against the rules. But as with everything, the refs need to be consistent. Skins and tape I can understand the refs picking these up now because it means that everyone knows it is going to be picked up, and later on in the season there is no excuse. I have seen coaches sent from the bench for using a mobile phone. I haven't seen them sent for using two way radios though.

Hi Scarecrow,
I wont argue with the fact that referees do get it wrong from time to time but more often than not when there is a disagreement between the refs and the coaches, its the ref who is right. Actually the ref is always right ;D
Three points. 1. This is not playing park football. The laws of the game at this level are applied a lot tighter, even the pedantic ones (and use of mobile phone is NOT a pedantic one).
2. Trust me; you would want the referees to apply ALL the laws of the game consistently and not just the ones they think is a good law and forget about the ones the coaches think 'is not common sense'.
3. There are three sets of common sense on the field. You and your team, the opposition coach and his team and then the referees' team. They are not always the same. For instance at this level, having only eleven players for a game and not having at least a second team official on the bench (one manager organising two teams!) is not exactly my idea of common sense.

You are right had the ball. Not having a second official on the bench is criminal. I will see if I can clone myself for next week. Silly me.

Mate from what i read you post here, you and four of your clones on the bench would still not get much done ;D Just for everyone's benefit, here is the wording from the laws of the game. "The use of electronic communications systems between players and/or technical staff is not permitted". If you have a problem with that, take it up with FIFA

The most important thing for referees to get right are fouls. Once they get fouls correct then I can cop all the pedantic stuff. My problem is that the referees enforce these pedantic rules and forget basic rules. I ran onto treat a player who got injured cause she was kicked by a defender, the opposition player said in full earshot of spectators and both the referee and assistant referee 'yeah I got her I got her good I didn't even get the ball'. Play was restarted with a throw in.
I have referees previously so I know the laws better than most coaches.

You are probably right head the ball. Couldn't have four clones though, that would be too many people in the technical area.

Why don't you come up here and let us referee you . You won't have any issues. Trust me! I take it you are a qualified referee!!!!!

I actually didn't have nay problems in Bathurst last year. The first time I can remember it happening. I was a qualified referee a few years ago but the laws on fouls have not changed. I always defend referees but when common sense goes out the window and blatant fouls are ignored is when I have a problem
