On Saturday we had an incident where the visiting goal keeper took out the home striker, just outside the penalty area, a free kick was awarded and the offender was cautioned and shown the Yellow Card. The home team wanted to know why it wasn't a Red Card and the visiting team wanted to know why it was a card at all. How can we as referees win? Damned if you do and damned if you don't!

If the striker was heading towards the goal and the keeper was the last man, it's a red. Maybe the striker was running towards the sideline at the time or facing his own goal on a turn, who knows. Then that is a yellow card for me.

Then that is a yellow card for me. Just rephrasing a bit; if the striker was denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity then it should have been a red (there is no such thing as the last man) ;D

The Red can't stand because it wasn't shown. In the debrief the ref was of the opinion that this wasn't an OGSO. If it had been, then 'goodbye'.

Refs should not be allowed to have opinions. Only real humans should be afforded that luxury.(lol)
