A referee in a State League Division 2 game made a mistake during a penalty situation.
Players reacted very badly and the game was abandoned, due to the referee feeling threatened.
Moral of the story get the restarts right.
Question is, when did players start playing/knowing the Laws of the game?

Leave the refs alone. When a striker makes a mistake the midfield coversit - when a midfielder makes a mistake the backs cover it. When a ref makes a mistake no-one can cover it. Just remember we are all human and we ALL make mistakes!!

Even if the referee did make a mistake, what a disgrace it is that he abandoned the game because he was frightened of his safety. If he was threatened, ban the players or officials that did it for life. Who needs people like that in our game anyway. No wonder the referee numbers are diminishing at a rapid rate.

shinpad, he disallowed a successful penalty for team mate encroachment. The restart should have been a retake, but the ref was confused a awarded a goal kick. The game could have continued but one of the Hurstville players harassed the referee enough to get himself sent off. He then intimidated the referee who wisely abandoned the game. I myself would have done the same thing if I felt threatened.
The point of my original post was that, as shakey010 put it, players can make mistakes but referees aren't allowed to.
A worse mistake was that the game was going to be restarted using another referee (wrong in my opinion). However this never eventuated as the Hurstville coach wanted the player that was sent off to be allowed to continue to play. When his request was refused he removed his players from the field.

He wanted the sent off player to continue, that is a disgrace. What age group are we talking about and how old was the referee. Wasn't anyone there to advise him ?

This was State League Division 2 1st Grade. I'm not sure of the age of the referee. Possibly 20 or so?
