The worst association for politicals in refereeing is the Eastern Suburbs.

It's considered cheating. I bet the keeper didn't even know the rule. Maybe he was warned earlier and he ignored the ref. I didn't even know about this rule until I read the rule book. Some fields actually have the centre of the goal marked. A ground keeper told me he does it to stop keepers from digging up the centre.

Laws of the game, Page 58,
Field markings If a player makes unauthorised marks on the field of play with his foot, he must be cautioned for unsporting behaviour. If the referee notices this being done during the match, he must caution the offending player for unsporting behaviour when the ball next goes out of play.

It just goes to prove that players and parent should trust the referees on the matters of the laws of the game.
By the way, if this law wasn't there you'd find some keepers making bumps in the goal area (by stumping) just after half time whistle to make life harder for the opposing keeper.

Had one last year in WSL. Player marked centre of goal with boot. Player got yellow.

Let me give you a little tip. Mark the centre of your cross bars (bottom) on your home ground and tell your keepers only. No one will notice because it will look like your keepers are praying.

They are politics in the refereeing ranks but if the FFA & FNSW keep going down the path of trying to get referee branches to be taken over by the football association then all hell will break lose - e.g. Eastern Suburbs.
It's a well known fact that in europe since the refs were taken over by their respective national bodies that corruption is rife in the referee ranks.
Look at the last 3 world cups, the refereeing standard has been abysmal, yet who runs these officials? FIFA appointed know-it-alls who have no refereeing experience yet do the selection, training & appointing of match officials.
