I shall kick off with an interesting one from a junior girls champ. of champs game a few weeks back. Very windy day. A defender takes a goal kick. The ball goes in the air and over the 18 yard line a few meters before the wind blows it back in. The goal keeper runs up in the box and picks the ball up. The ref asked for a retake of the kick. Right or wrong?

Play on would be my answer.
Once the ball has left the penalty area (whether on the ground or in the air) then the ball is in play.
It would be a very long bow for a referee to call it a "backpass" (to use the generic term). To claim that the player "deliberately" kicked the ball to the keeper would be a VERY BIG call!

Agreed. Why would the referee decide its a "back pass"? Surly it wasn't a planned move.
It was a young ref and the wrong decision didn't really cost either team. Just one those situations that you'd think never happens.

Lets take this a little further and see who knows the LOTG.......
In the above scenario, let's say the goalkeeper didn't pick the ball up and the the ball kept rolling until it ended up in the goal. What should the decision be?

if you score a goal from a goal kick a corner is awarded to the other team

The main scenario depicted is definitely play on. The referee thought he was doing the right thing.
The added scenario would be restarted by a corner as playa30 correctly stated. Although you can score a goal from a goal kick, but only at the other end of the field.

if you score a goal from a goal kick a corner is awarded to the other team playa30, Even if it is scored directly (going backward straight into the goal i mean)?

If a goal kick goes straight back into the goal it is a retake, as the ball isn't in play until it leaves the penalty area. Even if it goes out between the post and the 'side line' of the penalty box. Only if it leaves the penalty area is a corner awarded.

At the risk of creating a confusion here we go:
Quotes from laws of the game: "THE GOAL KICK... The ball is in play when it is kicked directly out of the penalty area" and "The ball is out of play when: it has wholly crossed the goal line or touch line whether on the ground or in the air"
ballboy, the PA has 4 sides, one of which is the goal line. isn't this a contradiction in the laws of the game? the ball can't be "in" and "out" of play as it crosses the goal line in the direct own goal from a goal kick scenario. Why would your answer use the second quote from the laws but not the first quote which is more related to a goal kick?

The PA has three inclusive sides (these 3 define the PA) as well as the goal line. The ball is not in play until it has crossed any of the 3 lines that define the PA. A ball that crosses the goal line without first crossing either of the two 'sidelines' is deemed not to have left the PA and a retake will result.

The ref was wrong. The ball is play after it leaves the penalty area (18 yards) and as the keeper has picked up the ball it is a indirect free kick to the attacking team. Artie, unless the ball is "deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper" by a team mate then you cannot award a free kick to the opposing team. As I stated earlier, you would be drawing a very long bow to claim that the ball was deliberately kicked to the keeper in this scenario, therefore it is play on.

Cindy after reading the question again you are correct. I was always told to read the whole question before you answer. If the keeper kicked the ball then my explanation would be correct. But as a field player has kicked the ball it would be play on. The ref was wrong.
