Congratulations to Spiros Agathos who has been selected for the NZ U17's for their WC qualifiers...a lad that missed the boat as he was a small 13 but quick...he has recently left SU and Bossley Park HS to join Newcastle Jets Youth and attend Hunter Sports HS...
be interested in any others out there that have done well despite the old cliche of 'you've got to be at X as this is the OFFICIAL pathway...if you're not there you'll never make it anywhere'... There's a song there somewhere...

Hey Sherlock - hope all is well - you know a lot more than what I do, but it seems more and more that players 'outside of the system' seem to be getting more shots to crack it at a later age. Am I right?

The question wasn't loaded...I'm interested in the stats about how kids go that are not identified by the system...I do have my own ideas about Talent Identification but it is a process that has been developed through further education, experience and consultation with experts involved in the field both in our game and in others...

For example, Bossley identified Spiros Agathos at 13 when he was smallish by predicting that he would be a lot taller by 17/18...and height and speed seems to be a prerequisite for employers (football clubs).

I don't believe players are developed by a system or out of a system. It comes down to individual eduction process, how a player digests what is being taught and how the player expresses that education.
Effort in application is the key.
The system here in NSW is changing each year as is coach/ technical direction outside the system therefore neither can claim to have developed a player. The most important aspect to development is the players themselves followed closely to parent involvement. NOT IN OR OUT SYSTEM.

Not sure I agree robbo. Every age group has it's favoured ones that get selected pretty much every time by every coach. Do they really look, or just follow their predecessors?
But look at the kid that came off the bench for Melbourne Vicory last night. Playing in the second division in Victoria. Now thats an example of someone from out of the system!

Cream will always rise to the top, the main thing is to have a good work ethic , a lot of skill and speed , understand the game and a little bit of luck. You must put in the work / hrs with ball to get rewards, don't expect to will lotto if you don't buy a ticket.

Mark Bresciano was identified through the school boys system...a lad that I would like to see be given an opportunity is James Howard...he's as good if not better than national youth league players and would not be out of his depth in A League...

I know of a boy that was dropped from the U 15's NSW state team in 2010 and then in the SAME year invited to trial in Europe. He no longer lives here.

overseas is a different situation,,,,,,,,,,,, there is heaps of oportunities for our boys to Excel and make a living out of playing even in the lower leauges in England the money is much greater than here, as i would understand that is why players want to play elite football to one day get paid, because here in Australia your lucky to get anything at all. also short contracts so play for a year, then next season your gone.
